WOODWORKERS GUILD
TIPS FOR TOY MAKERS and SAFETY GUIDELINES
February 2004
The Child Life Departments of each agency we deliver to takes full responsibility for controlling what is given to the children.
We ask what kids like and get feedback.
We have been asked to supply craft items un-assembled so that the patient can assemble and paint the item.
Things we should do to make our products safe and fun for the children:
- Make sure that wheels on the cars will turn. Note: A 5/16-dia drill is best for the axle holes unless the hole is very rough. Humidity sometimes causes wood fibers to bind up after a while and wheels don’t turn freely. Please check. Soft wood is most problematic.
- Check all edges to be sure there are no places that could cut the kids.
- Fill any chips, knots holes, or rough spots.
- Remove any loose knots or discard and recut the toy.
- Glue any visible splits.
- All surfaces and edges should be smooth. Sand them please.
- Splinters are not acceptable. Glue or sand flush.
- Radius and sand appropriate parts for safe handling.
- Use white or yellow glues for assembly.
Things we should not do!"
Hot melt adhesives are not strong enough to hold wheels on. Do not use them.
